Current location:New quarters.
Current mood: cheerful

Voice post.
Manacles removed (thank you, Sparrow), a decent bath, a reasonable set of clothes, and much improved (thank you, terribly helpful people at the church).

And I even found one of my old tricorns from the last time I was here (fewer thanks to whichever friendly fellow threw it on a rubbish pile outside my old quarters and forced me to give it a bath as well as myself).

Well, city, bring on your curses. James Norrington is ready for you.

First order of the day was finding myself new quarters.

Second order of the day: Making myself useful. Employment appears to be the option here: I am possessed of the following curriculum vitae, should anyone see fit to hire me

Considerable skill in the arts of fencing and swordsmanship.
Mathematics and geometry.
Reasonable dancer, although you shan't catch me in a reel.
All the usual tomfoolery one gets taught at finishing school in addition to useful sorts of things like the command of a ship: Polite french and german, the classics of Latin and Greek, though I confess to not paying a great deal of attention to Seneca or Horace. No more, lest I blow my own crumhorn, as it were.

EDITED TO ADD: Belay that request, ladies, gentlemen and otherwise, I appear to have been kindly offered a position.

It's a pleasure, Mr. Norrington. Princess Ananova Ariadne.

I run personal classes with swordsmanship, archery, knife throwing, and a few other things. I would need a second instructor, as well someone who can help me take care of the equipment.

An eminently suitable position, your royal highness! I accept with the greatest of pleasure.

Though I feel bound to confess, I bear no resemblance to Artemis or any other similar Hellenic Amazon of your apparent ilk, and therefore my archery leaves much to be desired. As does my greek, but nevertheless, ευχαριςτο.

After fifteen minutes of attempting to fathom the map and wandering aimlessly, Norrington, and his sword, found themselves outside a door, that should ostensibly lead to where he was going. He pushed down the handle, and opened it.

The harsh light of the desert flooded in through the door. He shaded his eyes and stepped through, then looked around. As his eyes adjusted to the light, he gradually made out the lines of the archery range. A few covered tables nearby held archery paraphernalia, some targets set up some distance away, and facing him, a slender, graceful form.

Norrington shaded his eyes. "Your highness Princess Ananova, I presume? I say, this is rather a singular place."

Ananova had been taking a moment to polish a particularly spotted knife. It had been some time since she had carried all these pieces out here, and they were looking somewhat poorly. These fingerprints may have even belonged to Jolly...

At the sound of the door, Ana turned to greet her new employee with a smile. Gods, was she happy to have another hand with all of this...

"Mr. Norrington, how good to meet you! The sun is harsh, but the conditions promise good exorcise."

Having obtained recognition, Norrington approached his new employer, bowed, and kissed her hand, politely. "Delighted, your royal highness." Goodness, but she was a dusky hellenic beauty. The royal blood was very evident indeed. A noble lady worthy of proper respect and honour.

"Harsh indeed. I imagine the lack of wind and the clear light make for good archery weather?" He guessed.

Ananova smiled. It wasn't often she came across someone with genuine, born and raised gentlemanly tendancies. She loved her freedom from royalty and respect in the city..but she did appreciate it when it seemed to find her.

"Well met, of course. And it does, yes. Over here--"

She turned back to her tables, lifting a curved sword.

"This is what we'll be using--a few straight blades there, rapiers, and so on. I teach Turkish styles, as well as a few others."

"Curved blades, eh? A touch piratical for my tastes, but they generally have a good swing to them."

Norrington went for one of the lighter rapiers instead. He rested the tang near to the hilt on the back of his hand to check the balance. Well weighted, for all it needed a spot of polish.

"I trained with a french school." He said, testing the sweep of the blade. "Father always thought they were better, but my instructor was a terribly high strung fellow, always rapping one on the knuckles when one dropped one's guard." He returned the rapier to the table and glanced at his knuckles, crabbed and red from years of the sea air. "My knife work is also sadly lacking, I'm afraid. There was an old midshipman who tried to teach me the art once, but I wasn't a terribly good student."

She chuckled, "A touch different from a cutlass, I assure you. These are Turkish swords, lighter, thin--the finest I could commission, and a few of my personal collection..."

She laid down the sword as he lifted another. Lord, they needed to be cleaned...

"The best tutors seem to be the ones with a firm, if not tightly wound hand."

"We can change that, of course. If you're willing." Ananova lifted one of her many thin throwing knives, and wiped a bit of smudge with the scarf around her neck.

"I was trained by my mentor, Herr Marxbruder..in everything. That man will live to see the second coming, just to spite me...but he taught me well."

Norrington smiled at that comment. The immortality of those who annoyed one was a vexation he knew all too well.

"All training in good time, no doubt." He nodded. "In the meantime, I think this splendid arsenal may be in need of a whetstone and some oilcloth - we'd better clean them. I presume you have the wherewithal?"

"Ahah. In that bag, there." She gestured a black case at the end of the table.

"I usually take care of them, but the world seemed to break down for a month or two..." She left the blades to favor her quivers and bows, making sure a few of them were still sturdy.

"I'm happy to be back at it..."

He nodded and, after fiddling with the catches for a second, opened up the case and examined the contents, removing some sharpeners and whetstones of various sizes, metal polish, cloths and suchlike. Picking out the knife in most need of attention, he tested the edge with his thumb, and then set to work.

"I quite understand. One always does prefer to take time for the proper care of things, but at times one alas just has far too many things on one's mind." He said, conversationally, allowing a sheen of polish to strip any blemishes from the steel (such high quality steel as well...), then rubbing it vigorously with a rough cloth.

Oh, yes, quite many a thing.. Ananova took a seat by the table, reaching into the bag herself. In a few days time, she might as well buy new batches of quivers, as poorly as these look.

"It was certainly more chaotic than normal, over the winter season...I think the bulk of us have fallen back into living day by day."
